Surfing is basically what makes Hawaii so significant from the other islands of the pacific.

Many islands of the Polynesian share similar myths and legends. Similar music and foods....

But only Hawaii has brought forth the birth of Surfing....

Once a spiritual performance, surfing today is viewed as the leading ocean sport in history!

*There are about 10 different kinds of surf-boards.

Wooden
A classic style made in the old style of ancient Hawaiians. Usually 12 feet long, these boards are HEAVY and strong. But they are rarely used and only by PROS.

Shortboard aka 'Thruster'
The most common board used for competitions. These boards are usually only 5-6 feet long and are intended for quick turns. The best board for Experts.

Fish
About same length as a shortboard only wider and have a wider bottom that splits like a fish's tail. It is used to maintain speed and maneuvering. Used by intermediates.

Gun or Bullet
Long and thing in width. These boards are meant for SPEED. A board meant for Intermediates.

Longboard
These are the classic boards perfect for Beginners. They are big and long and are often the board of choice in classic surfer films. What matters most is how you design the body and how you shred the waves.

Malibu or Mini-Mal
The malibu board is similar to the longboard in its shape and riding characteristics, but it's slightly shorter length and slimmer width and tail allow for sharper turns.

Funboard
These boards perform well in all conditions and are ideal for less experienced surfers. They are EXTRA long and sturdy.

Foamboard
Otherwise known as 'foamies' or 'softboards'. They are designed for beginners... as because they are foam, they are easier to catch waves on, easier to stand up on and much more stable in the water. Also as they are foam they are less likel to hurt you or others around you, and so are an obvious choice for surf schools.

Bodyboard
Otherwise known as a 'boogie board'. They are small, more rectangular boards you lay on rather than standing. Used by a variety of age groups, one of the safest options for families in small waves. Made from polystyrene, foam, wood or fibreglass. They can be very cheap, and are a lot of fun.

Sand Skating Boards
Though technically not a surfboard, these flat wooden boards are used to skate along the wet sand of the ocean line. They are small and round. Just for fun and can be used by anyone.

*This is still the biggest wave ANYONE has ever surfed.
