Should I own a LP Record Player?

Posted by JakBaronKing - February 3rd, 2010

WIth my reservation of Bioshock 2 - Special Edition - part of the order includes a LP Orchestra Score of the soundtrack.

I never owned a LP Record Player - But I hear that they sound just as good as CDs if not better, LP's are stronger, and that it just is a pleasure to have and collect.

I'm thinking if I own a record player, I'll start an Elvis Collection. Elvis was pretty big in Hawaii.

But then again...I could easily just ITunes the collection for a much cheeper price.

Owning a Record Player is a aesthetic novelty item. Not a necessity since I already have my computer.

But...it does look nice.

So - NG community.

Should I get a LP Player?

Are Vinyl Records expensive? Where's the best place to buy them?

A Nice Cheep one is about 150 dollars. Shipping included.

hey you're back

Yeps - so what do you think? Record Player seems nice...

But I'm kinda the type to really needs to think about his purchases you know?

I mean....my computer already plays music. But what makes records so special?

It's something I don't need but am curious about.

I have one but that's not for listening to music... it's a newer record player with USB connectivity for converting the records to digital audio. My parents have a large collection of records and I've converted the ones that interest me. If I was in your position I wouldn't buy a record player which fulfills no real purpose but being a conversation piece. Did you not get the soundtrack in any other format?

As for the percieved "better quality" of the LPs that some people freak out about... I think you'll really have to be born in the age of vinyl records to appreciate the difference. I feel it's a much more physical experience to hold and play back a big piece of vinyl, and for some people it might bring a pleasant nostalgia. But in the long run, I think it's not worth it. I'd choose a digital CD or good quality mp3 (not less than 192kbps though) anyday.

You know - you make a solid point.

It's not very convenient to own large Vinyl Records. And the sound quality is justifiable like you said.

I guess I don't need one.

That is such a beautiful song . . .I'm such a wuss :P

lol, speaking me being a wuss check out my new poem -on my post.

Elvis and Hawaii is like mixing Coconut with Pineapple.

There is actually a drink that exists today you can order in bars called a Blue Hawaii, created for Elvis when the movie was made.

Record players are out of date, very retro themed technology. I know that a few electronic appliance like Pioneer make modern record players, but as far as I know I don't think anyone makes the disks anymore. So obtaining a collection of old Elvis disks would be a chore, as well as expensive.

In the end it comes down to three questions I use frequently in my life.
"Do I need it?"
"Will I use it often?"
"Is this the best deal or price?"

I have a really old one, which is broke, but still, although I wouldn't say it sounds "better" than a CD, it sounds different. I personally prefer LP, just looks cooler, and I like the sound better, but, whatever floats you boat.
